Armchair: a guide to choosing the perfect seat for your home

An armchair is much more than a piece of furniture: it makes the difference between a living room that invites you to stay and one you merely pass through. Before buying, it’s worth asking yourself four basic questions that help you avoid regrets.

1. What will you use it for?

Someone looking for a reading spot by the window has different needs than someone who needs an auxiliary seat for guests. A model with a high back and wings encourages concentration and rest; a low, wide one, on the other hand, works better in spaces where people talk and share.

2. Measure the real gap, not the ideal one

Before falling in love with a design, measure the clear width between the wall and the living room table and subtract at least 40 cm for circulation. Also check the height of the backrest: if it exceeds the windowsill, it will block natural light. And don’t forget the front door; an armchair with generous arms may not fit through a narrow hallway.

3. Upholstery and structure

Fade-resistant fabric works well in homes with children or pets, while leather requires less maintenance but more care with temperature. As for the inside, a seat with pocket springs and high-density foam keeps its shape for years; if you notice it gives when you sit on it in the store, it will give much more over time.

4. Details that make the difference

  • Legs: solid wood legs bear weight better than plastic ones.
  • Covers: a removable-cover model simplifies cleaning and lets you change the look.
  • Weight: if you’re going to move it often, look for lightweight structures with side handles.

Take ten minutes to sit in it before paying. The posture of your back and the support of your feet on the floor are the best proof that this armchair is right for you.
