Checklist for Choosing a Sofa Bed for Sleeping

Before you pay: 12 points to check on a pull-out sofa bed

A pull-out sofa is not a classic sofa bed: the backrest folds backwards and the surface becomes flat without unfolding a lower base. That simplifies the mechanism, but it also changes what you should check in the store. This list is designed to be used with your phone in hand while you try out the model.

1. Opening system: true pull-out versus convertible

Check whether the backrest folds down until it is level with the seat or whether it is actually a drawer-style sofa bed with cushions on top. Ask about the opening angle and whether the mechanism locks in the flat position. A pull-out without a lock sinks when you sit on the edge.

2. Sleeping surface: measure the usable length, not the total

Many manufacturers give the exterior measurement of the sofa, not the area where you sleep. With the backrest folded down, the arms usually take away between 10 and 20 cm on each side. If you are 1.80 m tall, you need a usable surface close to that figure; otherwise, you will sleep diagonally.

3. Thickness and density of the seat cushion

The weak point of pull-outs is the lumbar area when flat. A low-density foam cushion (below 25 kg/m³) flattens within a few months. In the store, press with your knee in the center of the seat: it should recover its shape within seconds.

4. Upholstery and breathability

For sleeping every night, faux leather generates condensation and noise when you move. Chenille-type fabric or blended synthetic linen breathes better. If there are pets or children, ask for a sample and check whether it is removable or only surface-washable.

5. Structure and maximum weight

Ask about the admissible load per seat, not the total. A common figure in manufacturer documentation is around 90-110 kg per seat in domestic models; below that, it is best to be wary for daily nighttime use.

6. Access to the mechanism and spare parts

This is the most repeated mistake: buying a pull-out without checking whether the mechanism is standard or proprietary. If the hinge breaks after three years and there is no replacement, the sofa becomes unusable. Ask about parts availability and delivery time.

7. Compatibility with the opening space

The folding backrest needs free space behind it. Measure the depth of the sofa plus the travel of the backrest to the wall or furniture. In narrow living rooms, a pull-out can be a worse option than a front-opening sofa bed.

8. Seat height and accessibility for older people

Below 40 cm, getting up is uncomfortable. If the sofa is used as the main bed for someone with reduced mobility, consider a model with a high seat and firm arms to lean on.

9. Cover and maintenance

Check whether the cover is removable and whether it can be machine washed. Pull-outs with rigid seams in the hinge area tend to come unstitched; check the reinforcement at that joint.

10. Mechanism warranty, separate from the upholstery warranty

Ask in writing what each part covers. It is common to find warranties of several years on the structure and only one or two on the folding mechanism. If it is not in writing, it does not count.

11. Real test: sit on the edge and lie on your side

In the store, sit on the edge with the sofa closed and then open it and lie on your side. If you feel a bar under your hip, the base is not well resolved. This detail does not appear in the technical sheets.

12. Real price: add mattress or topper

Many pull-outs do not include a mattress and the seat cushion is not enough for sleeping daily. A 5-7 cm topper can solve it, but it adds cost and height. Calculate the total before comparing with a conventional sofa bed.

What a pull-out sofa is NOT good for

If you need a daily bed for two people for years, a pull-out with a seat cushion probably will not keep up. According to documentation from mechanism manufacturers, continuous nighttime use accelerates wear on hinges and foams. For occasional use or for one person, it is a better fit.

Before deciding, also check the measurements of the available space and the type of floor: a heavy pull-out on hardwood flooring can leave marks if it is dragged without protection.
