Cleaning a sofa with dogs and cats: fabric, colors and shapes

A sofa shared with dogs and cats accumulates hair, saliva and odor in invisible layers. The key is not to scrub harder, but to understand how the fabric, color and shape of the furniture interact with each stain. Before you start, vacuum all the seams with a narrow nozzle: that is where 70% of the hair hides.

Fabric: identify before wetting

Check the label or do the water test on a hidden corner. Synthetic fibers such as polyester tolerate light foam; linen and wool require almost dry cleaning. For urine or vomit, apply a mixture of warm water with a splash of white vinegar, dry with an absorbent cloth and repeat without soaking. Baking soda sprinkled on for 30 minutes neutralizes odors without saturating the filling.

Color: stains that change over time

On light upholstery, dark hair leaves visible shadows; use a damp rubber glove to drag it off. On dark sofas, white hair shows up more: an adhesive roller takes care of the surface layer and a vacuum with an electric brush finishes the job. Intense colors (blue, green, burgundy) can fade with aggressive products, so always test on a rear area.

Shapes and size: every corner calls for its own method

Straight sofas let you run the vacuum from top to bottom without obstacles. A chaise longue or a model with an integrated chaise creates deep corners where hair compacts: remove the cushions and reach into the gap with a soft-bristled brush. In small apartments, the sofa is often next to the window and collects more dust; clean the top of the backrest first.

Height and room: living rooms, flats and houses

A low sofa makes daily cleaning easier, but it traps hair at the base. Lift it with wedges or ask for help to vacuum underneath once a month. In houses with a garden, the dog comes in with sand: place a natural-fiber mat at the entrance to trap it. In flats without a lift, moving the sofa to the laundrette is complicated, so opt for machine-washable covers at 30 °C.

Schedule a deep clean every three months and a quick pass twice a week. That rhythm keeps the fabric firm, the color vivid and the smell of home, not of pet.
