Before you start: what you really need
A double trundle bed is not a single bed with a drawer: we are talking about two 135-150 cm sleeping spaces that overlap. Before buying, measure the free space from the front of the frame to the nearest piece of furniture. You need, at minimum, the length of the pull-out bed (190-200 cm) plus 30 cm of clearance to maneuver. If the bedroom is less than 3.2 m along that axis, the system will not work comfortably, no matter how compact the mechanism is.
Also check the height of the headboard or the top shelf: in many double trundle beds the lower bed pulls out toward the front and, if there is a shelving unit above, the maneuver becomes awkward.
Step 1: prepare the base and the floor
The most common mistake I have seen when assembling these systems is placing the bed on floating laminate flooring without protecting it. The trundle’s rollers bear quite a bit of weight and, when pulled out, they mark the wood. Place adhesive felt pads or a thin rug under the rails.
If the floor is not level, the trundle slides to one side on its own. A 30 cm bubble level is enough to detect it. Correct it with shims under the legs of the main frame before screwing anything down.
Step 2: assemble the upper frame
Follow the manufacturer’s order, but there is one detail the manuals usually overlook: do not tighten all the screws all the way at first. Leave a quarter turn of slack at the side rail joints, check the square with a try square, and then tighten in a cross pattern. This way you prevent the frame from ending up twisted and the trundle from rubbing as it slides in.
The slats of the upper bed base must sit at the indicated height; if they sit too high, the upper mattress will rub against the lower one when closing.
Step 3: install the pull-out system
Here there are two configurations:
- Side rails screwed to the base of the frame: more stable, but they require the piece of furniture to have a reinforced plinth. If your bed is made of 16 mm particleboard, check that the anchors come with metal reinforcement.
- Wheels or rollers integrated into the trundle frame: easier to assemble, but sensitive to dirt. In rooms with long-pile carpet, the wheels frequently get stuck.
Lightly grease the wheel axles with silicone grease (not oil) before first use.
Step 4: mattresses and heights
The combined height of both mattresses must not exceed the interior height of the frame when the trundle is closed. With mattresses of 18-20 cm each, the setup works in most models; with 25 cm spring mattresses, closing is forced. In that case, use a 12-14 cm foam mattress for the pull-out sleeping space.
Step 5: pull-out test and fine adjustment
Pull out and push back the trundle five or six times in a row. If you notice a hard spot, check that the rails are parallel: a 2 mm misalignment is noticeable. Adjust the end stops so that the trundle does not come out further than necessary and does not tip over.
Limitations you should accept
This system is not a substitute for two independent beds in continuous daily use. The lower mattress is more exposed to floor damp and drafts, and in winter you notice it. It is also not recommended for people with reduced mobility: bending down to pull out the trundle every night is uncomfortable. And if the bedroom is used as a living room, the daily back and forth ends up loosening the anchors; check the screws every few months.
