Efficient heating practical guide: 3 fixes that cut your bill

Heating: how to achieve comfort without blowing up the bill

Keeping the house at a pleasant temperature in winter shouldn’t become an economic headache. The key lies in understanding how your heating system works and applying small adjustments that make a real difference in consumption. Before investing in new equipment, it’s worth reviewing habits and the condition of the elements you already have installed.

The setpoint temperature, that detail that changes everything

Each extra degree on the thermostat notably increases energy expenditure. For a room where daily life takes place, setting the setpoint between 20 and 22 °C is usually enough; in bedrooms, 17 or 18 °C is sufficient. Programming different time slots according to the use of each room avoids heating empty spaces for hours. Today’s programmable thermostats allow you to define these routines precisely and without daily effort.

Radiators: bleed, clean, and don’t block

A radiator that accumulates air inside heats less and forces the system to work longer. Bleeding them at the start of the season is a simple operation that restores performance. It’s also advisable to clean the dust between the fins, since a layer of dirt acts as insulation and reduces heat emission. And a common mistake: placing furniture or curtains in front of the emitters hinders the circulation of warm air throughout the room.

Insulation and ventilation: two unexpected allies

Before turning up the heating, check for cold air inlets. Weatherstripping on windows and doors, rugs on cold floors, and thermal curtains reduce losses without any renovation work. Ventilating quickly and cross-ventilating, about ten minutes with the heating off, renews the air without cooling walls or furniture. Doing it with windows ajar for hours is exactly the opposite of what’s advisable.

Annual maintenance: the silent investment

Gas boilers require periodic inspection by a qualified technician; a dirty burner or incorrect pressure makes each ignition cycle more expensive. In electric systems, it’s advisable to verify that the emitters don’t have deteriorated resistors. Annual maintenance extends the equipment’s useful life and prevents breakdowns that tend to appear right on the coldest days of the year.

Combining heat sources according to the moment

Not all rooms need the same solution. A bathroom heats up quickly with an electric towel rail, while the living room can rely on a low-consumption stove during the central hours. Underfloor heating, if already installed, works better with gentle, constant flow temperatures than with sudden increases. Knowing these particularities allows you to design a mixed strategy, more flexible and adjusted to the real use of each space in the home.
