Before buying: understand what a folding trundle bed does and doesn’t do
A folding trundle bed is a piece of furniture with two combined functions: on one hand, a fixed seat or resting surface (like a sofa or low divan); on the other, a second bed that pulls out and, in many models, rises until it’s level with the first. The word “folding” often causes confusion: almost no trundle folds up like a camping chair; what folds or lowers is the lifting mechanism or the legs, not the entire mattress.
If your goal is to accommodate occasional guests without taking up an entire room, this furniture works. If you expect a daily-use bed for two adults over months, there are more comfortable and probably cheaper alternatives, such as a sofa bed with a spring mattress or a Murphy-style folding bed.
How to distinguish the three systems sold as “folding”
1. Simple pull-out trundle
The second bed comes out horizontally, on wheels or rails. It’s the most economical system and the one with the fewest moving parts. The height of the lower mattress usually sits 20-25 cm off the floor, which is uncomfortable for elderly people or those with knee problems.
2. Trundle with assisted lifting
A scissor or piston mechanism raises the lower bed until it’s level with the upper one. It gains in comfort and loses in price and weight. According to documentation from furniture hardware manufacturers, these mechanisms typically support mattresses up to 20-22 cm thick; exceeding that measurement strains the piston and shortens its useful life.
3. Fold-down or rocker trundle
Less common in Spain. The bed rotates on an axis and ends up vertical or hidden behind the backrest. It saves lateral space, but requires a clear gap in front of the furniture that many small living rooms don’t have.
Measurements you should check with a tape measure in hand
The most repeated mistake among beginners is measuring only the space where the furniture will go and forgetting the maneuvering space. A trundle 90 cm wide needs, at minimum, between 190 and 200 cm of free depth to be fully pulled out, plus a margin to walk in front of it. In narrow hallways or rooms with a facing wardrobe, the trundle becomes a nuisance every time a visitor arrives.
- Lower sleeping space: 80, 90 or 105 cm wide; 190-200 cm long.
- Total height of the closed unit: between 45 and 60 cm, depending on whether it includes a mattress.
- Weight of the furniture: a trundle with assisted lifting and a solid wood frame can exceed 70 kg. If you’re going to move it often, rule it out.
The mattress: where the guest’s rest is decided
Many sets are sold with 12-15 cm foam mattresses. They work for two or three nights; from the fourth night on, most users feel the bed base or the slats. If the intended use is more than a week, consider buying the furniture without a mattress and adding a high-density foam or pocket spring one of 18-20 cm, as long as the mechanism supports it.
A detail you only notice with use: trundle mattresses deform sooner in the shoulder area because the lower sleeping space receives less ventilation and usually ends up next to a wall. Rotating them every few months noticeably extends their useful life.
Cases where this furniture is not the best option
It doesn’t work well in living rooms with underfloor heating if the trundle sits very close to the floor: the lower mattress accumulates heat and breathes worse. Nor in homes with narrow staircases, because the furniture arrives in two or three packages and assembly requires space. And I don’t recommend it as a couple’s main bed: the lower sleeping space is usually shorter and access is uncomfortable.
If you have pets, check the lower part of the trundle: it’s a magnet for hair and dust, and many models don’t allow the mattress cover to be removed for washing.
Quick checklist before paying
- Measure the free depth of the room, not just the available width.
- Check the maximum weight supported by the mechanism (it usually appears in the technical specifications).
- Ask whether the mattress is included and its actual thickness.
- Verify whether the cover is removable and washable.
- Check the hardware warranty: pistons and hinges are the parts that fail first.
No folding trundle replaces a fixed bed in comfort, but well chosen it solves the problem of visitors without giving up the living room. The key is to measure the maneuvering space and not to skimp on the mattress.
