Folding trundle bed: what nobody tells you

When someone tells you “stay the night” and your living room is 18 m², the foldable trundle bed stops being a luxury and becomes pure logistics. I’ve assembled and disassembled this type of bed in rental flats, in children’s rooms that double as guest rooms, and in studios where the desk can’t be moved. What follows are real situations, not a catalogue.

The case of the 45 m² flat with a visit every two weeks

A standard trundle mattress measures between 80 and 90 cm wide and 190-200 cm long. The most common mistake: buying the bed thinking about the mattress and not about the free space around it. If the bed unfolds towards the hallway, you need at least 60 cm of clearance on the exit side so the person can get up without crawling. In a narrow living room, this means placing the bed with the opening facing the wall opposite the door, not towards the sofa.

A detail you only notice with use: folding leg systems with small wheels get stuck on floating laminate flooring with pronounced joints. 4-5 cm wheels with 360° swivel work better than fixed ones, but they raise the height of the assembly by 3 to 6 cm, which affects the height of the upper mattress relative to the sofa.

Older guests: what doesn’t work

Here it’s worth being transparent. A foldable trundle bed with a 12-14 cm thick mattress is not a bed for a 70-year-old with back or knee problems. Sleeping 25-30 cm off the floor and having to get up from that height is uncomfortable and potentially unsafe. For one-night stays with older adults, a folding scissor bed with a height of 40 cm or a sofa bed with a lever mechanism is more suitable. The trundle bed shines with children, teenagers and young adults who sleep well on any surface.

Couples on a trundle bed: when it makes sense

Two 90 cm single trundle beds placed together form a 180 cm surface, but the central join is noticeable if the mattresses have different densities. According to mattress manufacturers’ documentation, firmness should be uniform (ideally 25-30 kg/m³ foam density) to avoid the valley effect. In practice, many foldable trundle beds don’t accommodate two 90 cm mattresses because the drawer measures exactly 90 cm and the mattress needs 1-2 cm of clearance. Check the internal measurement of the drawer before buying mattresses.

Assembly and storage: realistic expectations

Folding and unfolding time ranges between 20 and 40 seconds on models with hinges and safety locks. What catalogues don’t mention: if the bed has wheels and the room has long-pile carpet, moving it becomes heavy going. And if the assembly is solid wood, the weight can exceed 50 kg, making it difficult to move on your own.

Another practical aspect: bedding. A 90×190 cm trundle needs 90×190 or 90×200 fitted sheets; standard 90×190 ones tend to be tight if the mattress is more than 14 cm thick. For the lower mattress, many people use duvet covers instead of fitted sheets because access to the corners is limited.

Common mistakes I see in shared flats

  • Screwing the bed to the wall without checking whether the folding mechanism needs space behind it.
  • Placing the trundle bed under a fixed bunk without verifying the clearance height: some need 15-20 cm extra for the mattress to turn.
  • Using old spring mattresses in the lower drawer; over time, the springs mark the trundle frame.
  • Ignoring the maximum supported weight. Most mid-range foldable trundle beds support between 80 and 100 kg per sleeping space; it’s worth checking the technical specifications.

When to choose another solution

If your guests sleep more than three nights in a row, a foldable trundle bed may fall short on comfort. If the space is so small that there’s no room to unfold it fully, a sofa bed with front opening or a mid-height inflatable guest bed is better. The trundle bed is excellent for occasional visits and children’s rooms, but it doesn’t replace a permanent bed for daily use. According to furniture industry studies, the average lifespan of a domestic folding mechanism is around 5-8 years with occasional use; with intensive weekly use, wear on hinges and runners accelerates.

Before buying, measure the space, check the weight of the assembly and ask yourself who is going to sleep in it. That question saves returns.
