Home office: how to create a functional and healthy space

Turning a corner of the home into an effective office requires more planning than it seems. It’s not enough to place a desk and a chair: light, desk height, and visual order determine how many hours you can work without fatigue.

Start with the location, not the furniture

Before buying anything, observe how natural light moves throughout the day. An area with a side window avoids reflections on the screen and reduces the need for artificial lighting. If the only available space is a hallway or a shared bedroom, consider a lightweight folding screen: it defines the space without construction work and dampens background noise.

The chair supports the project

The seat is the piece that most influences daily comfort. Look for a backrest with lumbar curvature, adjustable depth, and armrests that allow you to rest your elbows at 90 degrees. A detail that is often overlooked: the seat height should let your feet rest flat on the floor; if they don’t reach, add a footrest rather than forcing your posture.

Desk: measurements that prevent pain

The ideal work surface is around 120 centimeters wide by 60 deep. With the screen at arm’s length and the top edge at eye level, the neck stops tilting. Models with electric adjustment allow you to alternate between sitting and standing, a practice that activates circulation during long days.

Visual order and smart storage

Loose cables create mental noise. A tray under the desktop, reusable cable ties, and a power strip with a switch solve much of the chaos. For paper, vertical shelves are better than deep drawers: what you can’t see accumulates. Spend five minutes at the end of the day clearing the surface; you’ll thank yourself on Monday.

Temperature, air, and small gestures

A small space heats up quickly with the computer on. Ventilate for ten minutes every morning and, if you work many hours, add a green-leaf plant: it improves ambient humidity and provides a point of calm. The comfort temperature for concentration tasks is between 20 and 22 degrees.

A well-resolved home office doesn’t depend on the budget, but on having thought first about the body and then about aesthetics. With those foundations, any corner becomes a place where you want to work.
