The sofa bed takes double the wear: it’s used as a seat every day and as a bed when guests visit. That back-and-forth accumulates dust, sweat and food scraps in areas that are barely visible. Cleaning this piece of furniture well extends its useful life and prevents lingering odors.
Prepare the surface before wetting
Remove cushions, covers and any loose objects. Vacuum with the upholstery brush over the seat, the backrest and the cracks in the frame. On sofa beds with a fold-out mechanism, extend the surface until it becomes a bed: that’s where the greatest concentration of dust and crumbs hides. If you detect dust mites or simply want to refresh it, sprinkle baking soda, let it sit for an hour and then vacuum. This step neutralizes odors without wetting the fabric.
Cleaning according to the fabric
Before applying any product, look for the label with the cleaning code. The letter W allows water and mild soap; S requires dry solvents; WS combines both; and X only allows vacuuming. For fabrics that tolerate water, prepare a gentle foam with diluted liquid soap, apply it with a damp sponge and remove with a clean cloth without soaking. Treat specific stains from the edge toward the center so they don’t spread. On delicate or velvet fabrics, always test on a hidden area before cleaning the visible surface.
The mechanism needs cleaning too
The hardware of the sofa bed accumulates lint and dust that clog the hinges. Vacuum the rails and grease the articulation points with a specific product. A dry cloth is enough for the metal parts; avoid wetting them to prevent rust. Check that the screws are still tight and that the closure fits without forcing. A clean mechanism unfolds smoothly and suffers less wear.
Drying and maintenance habits
Leave the sofa extended and ventilated until the fabric is completely dry; retained moisture causes mold in the filling. Ventilate the room and avoid direct sunlight, which fades the fibers. To keep it clean between deep cleanings, vacuum every two weeks, rotate the cushions and shake out the covers. Use a protective cover if there are pets or children, and remove stains as soon as they occur: early spot cleaning saves a full wash.
