How to Clean a Sofa with Dogs and Cats: A Guide by Fabric and Space

Sofa cleaning when you live with pets

A sofa shared with dogs and cats accumulates hair, saliva and odors in the weave of the fabric. Before scrubbing with any product, check the upholstery tag: the letter W allows water, S requires dry solvent and WS allows both.

Weekly steps according to the type of fabric

  • Velvet or microfiber: vacuum with a soft brush and wipe with a barely damp cloth in the direction of the nap.
  • Linen and cotton: remove the hair with a rubber glove and apply neutral foam without soaking the fiber.
  • Synthetic leather: clean with diluted soap and dry immediately to prevent cracking.

Colors and shapes that make maintenance easier

Mid-tones such as stone gray, sand or sage green conceal marks better than pure white or black, where every hair shows. As for the shape, a sofa with straight lines and removable cushion covers simplifies deep cleaning; tufted models retain more residue in the folds.

Size, height and layout according to the home

In an apartment or small flat, a two-seater sofa with high legs is advisable: it allows the vacuum to pass underneath and lets the floor breathe. In a house or large living room, a three-seater with a chaise longue offers more surface area, but requires checking the cover frequently because it collects more hair. Seat height also matters: low models are comfortable for cats that jump up, while high ones make it easier to clean dust underneath.

Odors and hair: an effective routine

Sprinkle baking soda over the dry fabric, wait thirty minutes and vacuum. For embedded hair, use a rubber squeegee or a lint roller before dampening. Wash the covers at 30 degrees and air-dry outdoors, avoiding the dryer, which shrinks natural fibers.

With consistency and the right products, your sofa will keep its color and texture even if dogs and cats consider it their favorite spot in the living room.
