How to Clean Windows Without Streaks: A Practical and Effective Guide

Cleaning windows: the key is in the technique, not the force

Few household chores generate as much frustration as spending half an hour scrubbing a window and discovering, upon turning around, that the sunlight exposes every pass of the cloth. Cleaning windows isn’t about scrubbing with more vigor, but about following a logical sequence: removing dry dirt, dissolving grease, and drying without leaving residue. If you reverse that order, dust becomes an abrasive paste that scratches the glass and multiplies the marks.

Preparation: less product than you imagine

Before wetting anything, vacuum the frame and the windowsill; the dust accumulated there settles back onto the glass as soon as a breeze blows. For the mixture, a tablespoon of mild soap in a liter of warm water is enough. White vinegar works well against limescale, but it’s best to dilute it at 50% and not use it on glass with a solar control film, because it can damage the coating. Avoid ammonia-based glass cleaners if the window has an anti-reflective film.

The two-cloth method that eliminates streaks

Dampen a microfiber cloth and wipe the edges first, then the center with horizontal movements. Immediately afterward, with a second dry cloth, repeat the operation vertically. This crossing of directions prevents a uniform film from remaining and allows you to detect which area needs another pass. On large windows, work in strips of about 60 centimeters: if you cover too much, the solution dries before you can remove it and leaves whitish marks.

Tools that make the difference

High-grammage microfiber (from 300 g/m²) pulls away dirt without the need for pressure. A handle with a telescopic wringer is useful for high or hard-to-reach glass, while the mesh cloth should only be used on stubborn stains and never on tempered glass without first testing in a corner. For aluminum frames, an old toothbrush handles the tracks without scratching the lacquer.

Mistakes that ruin the result

Cleaning in full sun is the most common mistake: the product evaporates before you can spread it and the heat dries out the residue. It’s also not advisable to reuse dirty water between windows or to dry with newspaper, whose ink can transfer with moisture. And if the glass has stuck-on mosquitoes, apply a soapy water compress for two minutes instead of scraping with your fingernail.

With this routine, cleaning windows stops being a race against streaks and becomes a task of barely ten minutes per window, with a transparent finish that lasts longer because no residue remains to attract dust.
