The sofa is the piece of furniture that suffers the most when living with dogs and cats: embedded hair, dried drool, scratches and that persistent smell that settles in without asking permission. Before running a damp cloth over it out of habit, it’s worth understanding that the fabric, the color and the shape of the seat determine which product you can use without ruining it.
Identify the fabric before wetting it
Microfiber fabrics tolerate moderate moisture well; velvet and linen require dry foam and gentle brushing. On light-colored fabrics, soapy water with neutral soap tends to leave rings, so always apply from the edge toward the center and dry with cool air. Removable covers simplify everything: wash them at 30 degrees and vacuum the filling in the meantime.
Hair: better to remove it dry
A damp rubber glove picks up more hair than any handheld vacuum, especially in corners and between the cushions. For the curved shapes of the sofa, such as rounded armrests or chaise longues, use an adhesive roller and repeat the motion in a single direction. If the hair is very stuck, first pass a slightly damp cloth and let it air dry.
Pet stains and odors
Urine requires an enzymatic treatment: dry with absorbent paper, apply the product and cover with a cloth for several hours. Never rub, because you spread the stain and the odor into the filling. For drool and food residue, a mixture of warm water with a few drops of white vinegar works on almost all dark fabrics.
Adapt cleaning to the space
In a small apartment or a flat without a terrace, it’s best to clean in sections and ventilate daily. In a house with a large living room you can take the cushions outside, but avoid direct sunlight so the colors don’t fade. The height of the sofa also matters: low models accumulate more dust at the base, while those with tall legs allow you to vacuum underneath effortlessly.
A routine to make it last
Vacuum once a week with an upholstery nozzle, brush the fabric dry every two weeks and place a washable blanket on your pet’s favorite seat. That small barrier reduces the work and protects the sofa’s original color for years.
