How to Set Up Your Best Value Gaming Chair

Buying a budget gaming chair and leaving it exactly as it comes out of the box is the most common mistake. Assembly and initial adjustments determine whether a €150 chair feels like a €300 one or ends up in the storage room after three months. This guide is a real, step-by-step setup sequence so you can get it up and running correctly.

Step 1: check the space before assembling

Measure the available space with the chair in the reclined position, not just upright. Many budget models recline up to 135° and need 20-30 cm extra behind them so they don’t hit the wall. If the desk has a side drawer unit, check that the armrest fits underneath; the fixed arms on cheap chairs usually sit 26-28 cm off the floor, while a standard drawer unit has about 30 cm of clearance. An assembly trick: place the five-star base on the floor and sit on the seat for a moment before screwing on the backrest, so you can check the actual height of the gas piston.

Step 2: assemble in order and don’t overtighten

The manual for these chairs is usually brief. The sequence that works: base and casters, gas piston, mechanism, seat, backrest and, lastly, armrests. Tighten the backrest screws to 70% of their strength, sit down, adjust the tilt and then finish tightening. The screws on entry-level chairs strip easily; use the Allen key by hand, not with a drill.

Step 3: adjust ergonomics in this order

Seat height

With feet flat and knees at 90°, your thighs should be parallel to the floor. If the seat has a hard front edge, leave 2-3 fingers between the edge and the back of your knee.

Depth and lumbar support

Most value-for-money chairs come with a loose lumbar cushion with a strap. Place it at the height of the lumbar curve (just above the hips) and not in the middle of the back, which is the usual mistake. If the strap slips, a clothespin will hold the cushion to the backrest without damaging the upholstery.

Armrests and recline

Adjust the arms to desk height so your shoulders stay relaxed. Lock the tilt at around 100-110° if you spend many hours typing; full recline is for short breaks, not for eight-hour workdays.

Step 4: load test and break-in

The nylon casters on budget chairs need a break-in period. During the first week, check that the base doesn’t wobble: if one leg is loose, tighten the screw on that joint before considering the purchase settled. According to manufacturer documentation, the weight limit is usually between 100 and 120 kg in this range, but the gas piston is the part that fails most often; if you notice a sudden drop when you sit down, claim the warranty before the period expires.

What this setup doesn’t solve

No adjustment turns an entry-level chair into a certified ergonomic one. If you’re taller than 1.85 m or weigh more than 110 kg, the short backrest and thin cushion of many budget models will be too small for you no matter how you configure it. Nor should you expect cheap faux-leather upholstery to last more than two or three years without peeling at the friction points. And if the problem is diagnosed lower back pain, the chair is not the treatment: setup helps, but it doesn’t replace a professional assessment.

Final checklist before calling the assembly done

  • Chair stable on all five casters and without wobbling.
  • Feet supported and knees at 90° with the seat adjusted.
  • Lumbar cushion in the curve of the back, not in the middle.
  • Armrests at desktop height and shoulders relaxed.
  • Screws checked after the first week of use.
