Italian sofa online: configure it step by step

Before opening the configurator: measure the actual space

Buying an Italian sofa online doesn’t start with a click on “add to cart,” but with a tape measure. Most firms in northern Italy (Brianza, Veneto, Friuli) work with modules 70 to 120 cm wide and depths of 95 to 105 cm. A standard three-seater usually measures 240 cm, but models with a chaise longue go up to 290-310 cm. Measure the free space, subtract 10 cm on each side so it doesn’t look boxed in, and check that the entrance door has at least 80 cm of clearance: some arms are removable, but not all.

Step 1: choose the type based on use

Fixed, sofa bed or electric recliner

The fixed sofa is the most common in Italian catalogs and the one that offers the best price-durability ratio. The sofa bed with an Italian clic-clac mechanism or with a folding bed base adds 15-25 cm of depth and usually loses padding in the seat after a few years. The electric recliner (motorized reclining) requires a power outlet nearby and a rear clearance of at least 15 cm for the backrest to recline; if you push it against the wall, the motor suffers.

Step 2: decide on the modular configuration

Italian modular systems allow you to combine: corner module, central module, chaise longue, footstool and end module with arm. A common mistake is ordering the chaise longue on the wrong side relative to the wall: it can’t always be reversed by mounting it the other way around, because the connecting hardware is oriented. Confirm in the product sheet whether the module is “reversible” or “fixed left/right.”

Step 3: fabric or leather, with the data in hand

Upholstery Resistance (Martindale) Maintenance
Polyester-linen blend fabric 25,000-35,000 cycles Washable covers at 30 ºC on many models
Italian velvet 20,000-30,000 cycles Not suitable for homes with cats
Full-grain leather High, but it marks Annual conditioning; do not use products containing alcohol
Stain-resistant microfiber 30,000-40,000 cycles Damp cloth; avoid direct heat

The Martindale figure appears in the technical sheet. Below 20,000 cycles, the fabric is for decorative use, not for a living room in daily use. With velvet, the direction of the pile changes the shade depending on the light: always request a physical sample before confirming the color.

Step 4: filling and seat density

Mid-range Italian sofas use polyurethane foam of 30-35 kg/m³ in the seat and 25 kg/m³ in the backrest. Below 28 kg/m³, the seat sinks within two or three years. Some models combine foam with encased feathers: very comfortable, but they require fluffing the cushions every week. If there are small children, feathers are not the best option due to dust and deformation.

Step 5: treatments and protection

Factory stain-resistant treatments (nanotechnology or Teflon type) reduce liquid absorption, but they are neither waterproof nor permanent: they lose effectiveness with each wash. If the sofa is a light fabric and will be near a window, consider an anti-UV treatment. The warranty of many Italian manufacturers is voided if you apply an external treatment after delivery, so ask beforehand.

Step 6: cleaning according to the upholstery

Vacuum weekly with a soft nozzle to prevent dust from becoming embedded. On fabric, use a neutral cleaning foam and do not rub in circles: spread from the inside outward. On leather, use a slightly damp microfiber cloth and dry immediately. Never use steam on velvet or leather; on microfiber, steam can leave permanent marks.

Step 7: check shipping and assembly

An Italian three-seater sofa travels on a pallet and usually weighs between 70 and 120 kg. Check whether the price includes home delivery with two people or only “curbside.” Inspect the packaging upon receipt and photograph any damage before signing. If the module arrives unassembled, check that the connecting screws come with the complete set of hardware: a missing connecting piece is a common issue that delays assembly.

What doesn’t work the same for everyone

Buying a custom leather sofa online has a clear limit: the actual color of the leather varies by batch and by screen. If the living room has warm or very directional light, the shade may not match what you saw on the website. For high-end leathers, many firms send samples, but the production lead time can exceed 8-10 weeks. If you need the sofa in less than a month, limit your choice to in-stock models in standard fabric.

According to official documentation from manufacturers in the sector, delivery times for custom Italian sofas range from 4 to 12 weeks depending on the upholstery and configuration. There is no single guaranteed lead time: confirm it in writing before paying.
