Kitchen: the heart of the home and how to make the most of it

The kitchen has stopped being a service room to become the epicenter of domestic life. There you eat breakfast standing up, do homework, chat while sautéing an onion and, in many homes, even work remotely. Understanding that transformation is the key to making the space truly work.

Plan before buying

Before choosing furniture or appliances, it is worth drawing the route we take every day. The classic sequence —store, wash, prepare and cook— should occupy a continuous surface. When the fridge is far from the sink, every meal becomes a small marathon. Measuring the room and marking the future modules on the floor with tape prevents costly regrets.

Layouts that perform better

The shape of the room rules. A narrow corridor calls for a linear or two parallel-front layout; a large room allows for a central island, provided there are at least ninety centimeters of passage around it. In small flats, the peninsula attached to the wall multiplies the countertop without closing off the space. And if the kitchen is open to the living room, a quality extractor hood stops being a luxury and becomes essential.

Materials that age well

The cabinet fronts receive knocks, steam and grease every day. High-pressure laminates resist better than they seem and are cleaned with a damp cloth; solid wood brings warmth but requires more care. For the countertop, compact quartz balances price and durability, while stainless steel remains the favorite of those who cook over high heat. The floor, for its part, appreciates non-slip and easy-to-mop materials.

Lighting in three layers

A single ceiling lamp leaves shadows right where we chop. Combine general light, strips under the upper cabinets for the countertop and a focused source over the preparation area. Warm tones invite you to stay; neutral ones help you see the exact doneness of a stew.

Order that maintains itself

Interior drawers with dividers, adjustable shelves and corner carousels prevent the back of the cabinet from becoming a museum of clutter. Placing everyday items at eye level and reserving occasional ones for above and below reduces disorder effortlessly.

A well-thought-out kitchen is not the biggest or the most expensive: it is the one that allows you to cook without obstacles and gather without getting in each other’s way. With these guidelines, the space stops being a place to pass through and becomes the room that is enjoyed the most.
