Sofa for small spaces: questions answered

Choosing a sofa for a 45 m² flat is not a matter of aesthetics, but of geometry. These are the most frequently asked questions and the answers that matter before you pay.

How big is a sofa that fits in a small living room?

As a practical reference, in living rooms of less than 12 m², two-seater sofas with widths between 140 and 170 cm and depths of 80-90 cm work well. A standard three-seater sofa (200-220 cm) tends to eat up the walkway to the window or the access to the terrace. First measure the longest wall and subtract at least 60 cm of circulation space in front of the seat.

Is a fixed sofa or a sofa bed better in small spaces?

A sofa bed provides a second function, but it loses between 10 and 15 cm of depth compared to an equivalent fixed model due to the folding mechanism. If you are not going to have guests staying overnight, a fixed sofa with a deep seat and high legs frees up visual space and tends to be more comfortable for daily use. According to documentation from mechanism manufacturers, click-clac systems are the ones that require the least extra depth.

Does a light colour make the living room look bigger?

A light upholstery reflects more light, but in flats with little sunlight and heavy daily use it gets dirty sooner. A trick used by those who furnish small flats: choose a mid-tone (stone grey, toasted beige) and add contrast with cushions and a light-coloured rug. The visual effect of spaciousness depends more on the sofa not blocking the line of sight towards the window than on the colour itself.

High or low legs?

Legs of at least 12-15 cm let you see the floor under the sofa and make the piece of furniture appear to float. In narrow living rooms this reduces visual weight. Models with an upholstered base down to the floor gain storage (some include a drawer) but visually close off the space.

What mistakes are made when buying?

The most common one: buying from a photo without checking whether the sofa fits through the door or the lift. A frequent real case is that of 180 cm sofas that cannot pass through a narrow entrance with an L-shaped turn; the solution lies in modular pieces or a model with detachable arms. The backrest height is also overlooked: above 90 cm, in a low-ceilinged room, it blocks the window light if placed sideways.

What if the living room is so small that a sofa doesn’t fit?

A 120-130 cm sofa with a short chaise longue, or even a wide two-seater armchair, may be the only viable option. Here it is worth being honest: below 110 cm in width, the seat stops being comfortable for two adults and becomes an auxiliary piece of furniture.

What budget is needed?

Compact sofas with textile upholstery tend to start at entry-level prices, while models with a mechanism or stain-resistant technical fabrics rise noticeably. There is no guarantee of durability based on price: check the seat density (from 30 kg/m³ is a common industry reference) and the frame warranty.
