A sofa that advertises “cushions included” may seem like a bargain, but in practice the real value depends on how many there are, what filling they have and whether the manufacturer considers them part of the warranty. This comparison reviews the options most commonly seen in stores and furniture portals, with criteria that do not usually appear on the product sheet.
How the cushion packs offered by brands compare
There are three common formats on the Spanish market:
- Basic pack of 2 decorative cushions: typical of mid-range two-seater sofas. They are usually 40×40 cm with a removable cover and silicone fibre filling. The cost of replacing them is around €15-25 per unit, so including them barely affects the final price.
- Complete set with seat and back cushions: common in three-seater sofas and chaise longue models. Here the foam density does matter: below 25 kg/m³ the seat cushion starts to sag within months of daily use.
- “Courtesy” cushions: some online sellers include two very lightweight cushions to make up for thin upholstery. They are not comparable to those in a complete set.
According to the commercial documentation of several manufacturers, the thickness of the cover and the density of the filling are the two data points that vary most between ranges, and they are rarely detailed on the website.
Practical comparison: what to look at before deciding
1. Seat cushions: the detail almost no one publishes
A sofa with seat cushions included can turn out expensive if they have to be replaced after two years. The useful reference is the density and type of foam (conventional or high-resilience). If the product sheet does not state it, it is worth asking the seller in writing: it is a question many stores answer and one that makes the difference.
2. Decorative cushions: washable cover or not
The decorative cushions included usually have a zip cover. Those without one wash poorly and end up being the first thing to be thrown away. In models under €400 it is common to find cushions sewn without a zip.
3. Warranty: do they cover the cushions?
Upholstery warranties usually exclude wear of the filling. A cushion that flattens with normal use is not considered a defect. This does not mean the sofa is bad, but it is worth knowing before buying.
A specific case that changes the decision
In two-seater sofas with fixed seat cushions included, the problem arises when the user weighs more than 90 kg or always sits on the same side: low-density foam deforms asymmetrically and there is no way to rotate the cushion if it is sewn to the frame. In that case, a model with loose cushions, even if they are not included in the price, works out better in the medium term because it allows them to be turned and replaced separately.
When it is not advisable to choose a sofa with cushions included
If the sofa is going to be used daily for more than three hours, the included cushion pack is not a good indicator of quality: what matters is the frame and the type of foam. It is also not advisable for outdoor sofas, where the included cushions are usually made of non-waterproof fabric and end up being stored indoors for half the year.
In short: included cushions save you a purchase, but they do not replace checking density, cover and warranty. Asking for that information before paying is the difference between a sofa that lasts and one that has to be refilled within two seasons.
