Before deciding: identify the stain and the fabric
Most frustrations with a fabric sofa start with using the wrong product. Before considering whether a homemade solution or a professional service is appropriate, check two things: the sofa’s care label (codes W, S, WS or X) and the type of stain. Code W means it can be cleaned with water-based products; S prohibits water and requires solvents; WS combines both possibilities; X only allows vacuuming. If your sofa is S or X and you apply soapy water, you can set the stain or leave rings that are difficult to reverse.
This is not a minor detail: many inexpensive polyester upholsteries have stain-resistant treatments that react badly with baking soda and vinegar, two of the most frequently repeated free remedies. According to the technical documentation from upholstery manufacturers, these products can alter the protective layer and accelerate color wear.
Free alternatives that actually work (and when they don’t)
1. Warm water, mild soap and microfiber
The safest method for fresh food or drink stains without coloring. Apply foam (not liquid) with a white cloth, work from the edge toward the center and dry with a dry cloth. Cost: zero euros. Limitation: it doesn’t work for old grease or ink.
2. Baking soda for odors and sweat stains
Sprinkle, let it sit for several hours and vacuum. It works well on armrests and backrests. The typical mistake is moistening it too much: it forms a paste that dries inside the fiber and leaves a whitish halo that is hard to remove. In my experience, this happens especially on velvet and low-density microfiber.
3. Diluted white vinegar for coffee or tea stains
One part vinegar to three parts water, always on light-colored fabric and testing first in a hidden area. Don’t use it on linen or silk: the acidity can weaken the fiber.
4. Water with a few drops of dish soap for grease stains
Useful in open kitchens where the sofa accumulates cooking grease. Remove the excess with absorbent paper before applying. Never scrub vigorously: you spread the stain and lift the nap of the fabric.
Paid solutions: when they are worth it
A professional dry cleaning or injection-extraction service costs, depending on the sector, between 40 and 120 euros per two- or three-seat sofa, varying by city and condition. It is worth it in three cases: sofas with code S, extensive stains (more than a third of the seat), and upholstery that has gone more than five years without deep cleaning. Injection-extraction introduces water and extracts it almost completely; if drying is not quick, a musty smell can appear in the foam filling.
Rental upholstery cleaners (between 20 and 40 euros per day) are an intermediate option: cheaper than a professional, but they require knowing how to handle the machine. A common mistake is not vacuuming dry first: the dust turns into mud inside the fiber and the result gets worse.
Quick comparison
- Free: mild soap, baking soda, diluted vinegar. Cost €0. Ideal for fresh stains and maintenance.
- Low cost: specific upholstery products (€8-20). Safer than homemade remedies on delicate fabrics.
- Machine rental: €20-40/day. Only if you have several pieces or large stains.
- Professional: €40-120. For S fabrics, old stains or valuable sofas.
What I cannot guarantee
No method removes 100% of ink, varnish or old red wine stains on linen. In those cases, the realistic option is a slipcover or reupholstering. Nor is there a universal formula: the same trick that works on cotton can ruin velvet. When in doubt, always test in a hidden area and consult the manufacturer’s label.
