Trundle bed with drawers: what nobody tells you

The trundle bed with drawers is one of those pieces of furniture that on paper solves everything: an extra bed for guests and storage without taking up wall space. In practice, anyone who has set one up at home knows there are details that catalog photos don’t show. Here are real cases, with what works and what doesn’t.

The 55 m² flat with a visit every two weeks

A common case: a small master bedroom, no guest room, and siblings or friends who stay over fairly often. The trundle bed solves the problem because the second mattress lives underneath the first and only unfolds when needed. The drawers built into the front or the side make use of the gap that would otherwise be dead space.

The most common mistake in this scenario: buying the model before measuring the opening clearance. A trundle with drawers needs the lower bed to come out completely, and if there’s a nightstand or a wardrobe less than 60-70 cm from the side, the mechanism gets blocked. According to the technical documentation from several manufacturers, you should leave at least the full length of the lower module free plus a margin for maneuvering.

Shared children’s room: order as a priority

In rooms shared by two children, the trundle bed with drawers is used less as an extra bed and more as a storage system. Bedding, small toys, shoes. The drawers tend to be shallow (between 15 and 25 cm depending on the model), so they’re no good for storing thick duvets or large suitcases. It’s a real limitation that many product listings omit.

What to store and what not to

  • Yes: folded sheets, pajamas, books, children’s footwear, school supplies.
  • No: bulky winter blankets, tall baskets, items needed daily (it forces you to bend down and pull out the bed).

A detail from experience: drawers with metal runners hold up better to daily use than those with plastic runners or those that simply roll on the floor. If the furniture is going to be opened daily, it’s worth paying the difference.

Study with a replacement sofa bed

Anyone who works from home and gets occasional visitors often hesitates between a sofa bed and a trundle bed. The trundle bed wins on sleeping comfort (a fixed mattress, not folded) and on integrated storage. It loses on living-room aesthetics and on the fact that it doesn’t work as a seat during the day. For an office that occasionally turns into a bedroom, it works; for a main living room, it doesn’t.

What it doesn’t solve

It doesn’t replace a wardrobe: total capacity rarely exceeds 100-150 useful liters. It isn’t suitable for spring mattresses more than 20 cm thick if the trundle has little interior height. And you shouldn’t force the mechanism with weight on top: the upper bed must be empty when unfolding the lower one.

Before buying, measure the opening gap, check the interior height of the drawer and verify the maximum supported weight indicated by the manufacturer. It’s the only way the furniture will deliver what it promises.
