Vacuum-Packed Sofa: Questions Answered Before Opening the Package

What you should know before cutting the plastic

A vacuum-compressed sofa arrives rolled up and sealed, with a volume that usually ranges between one-third and one-half of the fully expanded piece of furniture. The question that comes up most often isn’t how to open it, but what happens right after. Here are some concrete answers, including the cases where the usual method doesn’t work.

Where do you start opening the package?

At the bottom corner, never in the center of the top face. The plastic is under tension, and when you puncture it at the point of greatest pressure, air rushes in and the block can shift. With a small utility knife or blunt-tipped scissors, make a cut about ten centimeters long parallel to the floor and let the sofa draw in air slowly. According to documentation from several polyurethane foam manufacturers, full volume recovery can take between 24 and 72 hours, and it isn’t sped up by opening it faster.

How long does it take to take its final shape?

It depends on the density of the foam and the room temperature. Below 18 °C the process slows down noticeably; in a cold apartment in winter, a two-seater sofa can still show visible wrinkles on the third day. A little-known trick: placing the sofa in the warmest room in the house during the first few hours helps more than massaging the upholstery. What doesn’t work is forcing the corners by hand too early; it deforms the structure and then it doesn’t recover.

Should you take it out of the plastic completely on the first day?

Yes, and for a practical reason: the film retains moisture. If the sofa stays wrapped in a humid environment, the upholstery can take on a musty smell. Also remove the straps and the protective cardboard before letting it rest. That said, keep the packaging for at least two weeks if you bought online: many return policies require the product in its original packaging, and an already expanded sofa won’t compress again.

What do I do if a wrinkle or a dent appears when I open it?

Wait. The crease marks from shipping are normal and usually disappear on their own. A localized dent that persists for more than 72 hours is grounds for a claim. In that case, photograph the defect with a ruler or a reference object next to it: customer service departments ask for scale references, and a photo without one is rarely useful for processing the issue.

Cases where this method doesn’t fit

Sofas with a solid wood frame and pocket springs don’t usually come compressed, and if they do, the manufacturer provides its own instructions that take precedence over any general advice. Nor should the process be applied to second-hand sofas that have been stored for a long time: the foam has already lost its elasticity and the vacuum won’t bring anything back. And if the piece of furniture is going up to a floor without an elevator, open it in the entrance hall only if you have space; if not, take it up closed, because an expanded sofa on a landing is a serious logistical problem.

Quick questions

Can I sleep on it the first night?

On a sofa bed, it’s better to wait. The mechanism needs to settle and the foam panels are still rigid.

Does it smell strange when opened?

A new-foam smell is normal. Ventilate the room for several hours; if it persists for more than a week, check with the seller.

Can it be compressed again for a move?

Not on a DIY basis. Without industrial machinery, the volume isn’t recovered and forcing it damages the filling.
