Clean sofa with pets: fabric, colors and ideal size

A sofa lives alongside fur, scratches and the occasional accident. Before choosing the next one, it’s worth thinking about who is going to use it: a large dog that jumps up in one leap or a cat that sharpens its claws on the armrest. The fabric, the color and the height make the difference between a piece of furniture that ages well and another that is painful to look at after six months.

Fabrics that resist (and those that don’t)

Microfiber and tightly woven polyester withstand rubbing well and can be cleaned with a damp cloth. Velvet and linen attract fur like a magnet and retain the moisture from licks. If the sofa has removable fabric, washing the covers at 30 °C once per season solves a lot. For specific stains, warm water with a few drops of mild soap and air drying, without rubbing in circles.

Colors that disguise without giving up style

Mid-tones —stone gray, olive green, petroleum blue or toasted beige— hide light and dark fur better than pure white or black. A light sofa in a small apartment makes the room feel larger, but it requires more maintenance. In a house with a garden, where they come in and out with dirty paws, an earth tone or a discreet pattern forgives more.

Size and height according to the room

In an apartment living room, a two- or three-seater sofa with high legs makes it easier to vacuum underneath and gives a sense of lightness. In a home with a medium or large dog, low, wide seats are more comfortable for them, although they accumulate more dirt on the underside. Measure the gap between the floor and the seat: below 15 cm, cleaning becomes complicated.

Shapes and routines that help

Straight backs and narrow arms accumulate less fur than models with curves and tufting. A washable blanket on the seat reserved for the pet protects the upholstery and goes in the washing machine every week. Brushing the animal two or three times a week reduces the amount of fur that ends up on the sofa. And a couple of spare covers allow you to rotate while the main one is being washed.

Choosing wisely saves trouble: a sofa designed to live with dogs and cats doesn’t have to be ugly or expensive, just suitable.
