How to Clean Glass Without Streaks: Step-by-Step Method

Few household chores generate as much frustration as cleaning glass and discovering, when held up to the light, a trail of white marks. The problem is almost never the dirt, but the technique: products that leave residue, unsuitable cloths, and direct sunlight that dries the liquid before you can wipe it away.

Prepare the surface before wetting the glass

Dust and sand act like sandpaper if you drag them with the cloth. Remove the surface layer with a soft brush or a microfiber duster, especially on exterior windows and patio doors. Then remove the grease with warm water and a few drops of dish soap; this mixture is enough for urban dust and insect remains, and avoids saturating the environment with harsh chemicals.

The double-cloth trick

The most effective homemade formula combines one part white vinegar with three parts water. Apply the solution with a damp microfiber cloth and, without letting it dry, go over it with a second dry microfiber cloth with a short weave. The first dissolves; the second buffs. If you work with a squeegee, replace the rubber blade with a quality one and clean the edge after each pass: a worn blade is the main cause of the water bands that appear the next day.

What to avoid so you don’t damage the glass

  • Newspaper: leaves ink and fibers in the corners.
  • Undiluted pure vinegar: can attack aluminum frames and rubber seals.
  • Cleaning in full sun: the product evaporates before it can be wiped off and leaves a white film.
  • Scouring pads or abrasive sponges: micro-scratches that accumulate over time.

Order of work and finishing

Always work from top to bottom and from left to right, slightly overlapping each pass. On double-pane windows, clean the interior side first and then the exterior to detect cross streaks. For the frames, use a barely damp cloth and immediately dry the rubber seal, where moisture and mold accumulate. A final pass with a clean, dry microfiber cloth against the grain removes any fingerprints.

Realistic frequency

In high-traffic areas or near the sea, it’s best to repeat the process every two weeks; in quiet interiors, once a month is enough. Keeping the cloths washed without fabric softener and storing the glass cleaner away from heat will extend the results and reduce the effort in each cleaning.
