How to Clean Your Sofa with Dogs and Cats Without Damaging the Fabric

The sofa is, without question, the piece of furniture that suffers the most when there are dogs or cats in the home. Hair gets embedded in the fibers, paw prints mark the upholstery, and the occasional accident leaves its trace. Before scrubbing with the first product we find, it’s worth understanding what type of fabric we’re dealing with, because the method and the result depend on it.

Identify the fabric before wetting it

Check the sofa’s label or consult the manufacturer’s specifications. Polyester fabrics and microfibers tolerate cleaning with dry foam well, while linen and cotton call for small amounts of water and quick drying. Velvet and corduroy require dry brushing so as not to flatten the fabric’s nap. If you don’t know the material, always test on a hidden area, such as the back of the backrest.

Pet hair: remove it dry

Before applying any liquid, remove the hair with a lint roller, a dampened rubber glove, or a rubber brush. Running the vacuum with the upholstery attachment works well, although on heavily textured fabrics the hair gets caught and it’s worth supplementing with a slightly damp sponge. The less hair left trapped, the more effective the subsequent wash will be.

Washing according to the size and height of the sofa

In an apartment with a two-seater sofa and low legs, the practical approach is to work in sections and with little water. In a house with a large, tall sofa, we can remove the cushions and treat them separately. Removable covers are washed in the bathtub or in the washing machine on a gentle cycle, always at low temperature. Fixed covers are cleaned with foam: spread it on, let it sit for a few minutes, and remove it with a clean, barely damp cloth, without soaking the foam.

Stains and odors

For urine, dry first with absorbent paper, apply a mixture of water and diluted white vinegar, and finish with baking soda to neutralize the odor. Food or mud residue should be removed as soon as it’s detected, without rubbing in circles, to avoid spreading the stain. A microfiber cloth and gentle movements from the edge toward the center prevent rings.

Colors, shapes, and drying

On light-colored sofas, quick drying prevents water marks; use a fan or open the windows. On dark tones, avoid direct sunlight, which fades them. Sofas with curved shapes or a chaise longue require checking the corners, where dirt accumulates. And remember: a washable cover and a blanket on the seat are the best prevention for the next rainy day with the pets inside the house.
